The joys of pumping at work
Thursday, August 1, 2013
I found a few of helpful places that helped to point me in the right direction:
1. KellyMom - Pumping & Employment: http://kellymom.com/category/bf/pumpingmoms/
2. La Leche League - Pumping: http://www.lalecheleague.org/nb/nbpumping.html
3. Work & Pump - http://www.workandpump.com/
Nothing could really have prepared me fully for the experience. Granted I am only 1 1/2 weeks in, but I feel like I am sort of a pro at it now. It honestly is not as hard as I thought it was going to be, but there are some tips I'd like to share that have helped to make my experience a little better. I wish I could have heard these tips before I started so I figure that I may as well share them with you all.
1. It's the pump that counts. Back when I was pregnant, I found out that insurance would cover a breast pump. I was excited to knock that item off of the registry. I was dead set on getting a Medela, since it seems to be the gold standard in the pumping world. I was unsure on the actual pump to get. My insurance fully covered the "Pump In Style Advanced". When I went to pick it up, I found it to be quite heavy. My daily commute to work includes up to 4 miles of walking, so I was worried about the heaviness. I ended up getting the "Freestyle", which is the lighter version of the double electric pump. It can be used away from the bag, which is something that the Freestyle can't do. The cooler bag and ice pack that were included with the pump are awesome. I freeze the pack at night and place the milk in there and in the fridge. It is a good system. I am so extremely glad that I got this pump. It has been awesome so far. I would STRONGLY recommend it to anyone who has to walk to work with the bag and doesn't want to be tired to the bag.

3. An emergency manual pump. I have never used this, but I bought the Medela Harmony Manual Pump on Amazon for $40. I am keeping it at my desk at work for emergency situations, like if I forget my pump at home or my electric pump malfunctions. It is insurance that I am glad to have.
4. Axillary pumping items. I have the Medela Quick Clean Wipes, which I would strongly recommend. You don't need water. I clean the parts between my first 2 sessions at work and then put them into a clean gallon sized bag. I have a bottle of hand sanitizer. This is good after touching the gross community doorknobs. Tissues/paper towels are also handy. I seem to spill a lot and also I use the paper towels to quickly air dry the parts after wiping them down. I keep extra breast pads and lanolin in the bag as well. You never know when you might need one of those items.

6. Start pumping one extra time a day before going back to work to build up a stash in the freezer. I did this and I am so glad that I did. I have over 100 oz in the freezer just in case. I actually keep adding a little to it each day to the point where I am running out of freezer space! I guess it is time for a deep freezer!
7. Walking in and out of the "lactation room" (or "quiet room" as my company calls it) is awkward. Being in the lactation room at all is awkward. Waiting to use the lactation room is both tedious and annoying. Today I ran into an issue where someone was parked in the room with the door locked for 45 minutes plus. I am the only person pumping in my office right now, so the person that was in there was either taking a private phone call or taking a nap. I was pretty infuriated and made a call to HR. I asked for a sign-up sheet for the room, which I think is a reasonable idea, but I am not sure the idea will go anywhere. For now I am left to fend for myself and I pray every time I go to pump that the door is open.

9. I don't use a hands free bra. Well rather I didn't purchase one. I seem to be able to do hands free with a regular nursing bra by leaving it clipped and just wedging the pump shields in there. Once the section gets going, they stick on pretty well and I can surf the web on my iPhone.
10. When I get home I fill up a pink bucket (that I was gifted at the hospital) with the Medela Quick Clean Breastmilk Removal Soap and hot water, let the parts soak for 5 minutes, rinse them, and dry them on the bottle rack. Some people say the soap isn't worth it. I beg to differ. It leaves no residue and requires no scrubbing. The bottles are squeaky clean.
So in a nutshell, this is my life for 2 plus hours a day for the next 6 plus months (I hope). It is tough and kid of a pain, but I am hoping that my hard work pays off. I know that I appreciate the time that my mom spent breastfeeding me. I hope little B feels the same way when he gets older!

Holding it all together and making it work...for now
Wednesday, July 24, 2013
I have debated with myself lately about closing up shop with this blog because it is quite clear to me, and anyone else who used to read, that I rarely post any more. The truth is that I barely have time to go to the bathroom anymore let alone sit down at a computer to type a collection of coherent thoughts a few times a month.
I miss blogging. I miss my bloggie friends. I feel like every time that I have a chance to actually sit down and read, I am so far behind in each blog that I have to go back many posts to catch up.
So here goes, one last try. If I can't pump out 4 posts by August 23rd then it is time for me to move on. Stay tuned!
The past two weeks have been really tough for me. This past Monday was my first day back in the office, full-time. Last week I spent preparing to be back in the office so that this week would be less stressful for me. I think I cried every night last week when I would hold my baby, thinking to myself about how unfair it is that I can't spend my days with him instead of going to work every day. Mommy guilt is such a strong force. That in combination with the sleep deprivation can be a recipe for disaster. In the last 3 nights, I think I have had a combined 5 hours of sleep. I passed out cold on my train ride this morning.
My sister is graciously nannying for us. We are so incredibly thankful to have someone with an early childhood education background watching out son. This has not been without its challenges though. She is several years younger than me and has spent the last 2 years in a third world country teaching underprivileged children. Going from an unstructured and stress free life to a regular routine (complete with a schedule and documenting baby feeds/poops/sleeps in BabyConnect) has been more difficult than she or I imagined. Not to mention that she is living with us in our tiny 1100 square foot house and is a vegetarian in a Paleo house. To her credit, she is is really settling in nicely and is doing a great job. I have not had to worry about B. We decided that she is going to watch B from 6 AM-5 PM and then live her life, baby free. If B were in daycare, it would be the same thing.
Work itself has been fairly busy so that the days are going by super fast. I have worked out a schedule of 7:15 AM- 3:30 PM M-Th and then 8-4 PM on Fridays, from home. I am pumping 3 times a day: 8:30 AM, 12 PM, & 3 PM, for 15 minutes each session at work. I also have to tack on an extra 10 or so minutes for clean-up (Medela no-water wipes are AMAZING) and 5-10 minutes to wait for the gentlemen that I work with to vacate the lactation room and take their personal calls elsewhere, so it is pretty time consuming. The room is also pretty awful. A closet with a small plastic covered couch, a small square Ikea table and one uncomfortable chair. There are milk stains on the carpet and on the couch. The walls are manilla. It is awkwarly located near several cubes with no walls in which only men sit so they see me go in and out and of course they always look up when the door opens. This aside, I have been pretty successful with pumping so far, although I know it is early. Yesterday I got 8 oz, 6 oz, and 5 oz. B is taking 3 bottles of 5 oz each when I am gone, so I am making more than he needs right now. I am super thrilled about this. I also have several hundred ounces saved up in the freezer for emergencies.
On the topic of sleep, B has been regressing from his solid 5-6 hours straight, back to 2-3 hours at a time. This totally sucks for me when I am going to bed at 11 PM and getting up at 4:30 AM. It sucks even more because I am getting up at 1 AM and 3 AM to feed him because he is Houdini and can break out of any swaddle including the SwaddleMe and the Miracle Blanket. He has also gone from going to sleep fairly easily around 7:30-8 PM to going to sleep but then waking up every 40 minutes and fussing until my husband or I soothe him back to dreamland. We are going to try to move him from his co-sleeper in our room to his nursery this weekend. I think we are also going to try to wean him off the swaddle again because he just busts out of it anyways.
I was in a good groove with working out up until this week. I signed up for my marathon and was running at least 3 days a week, with a long run on Saturdays (last weekend I ran 10 miles!). This week I have not run at all. Partially because I am exhausted. Partially because I get home from work around 5 PM and then have to take care of B and try to put something on the table for dinner. Partially because I want to spend time with my little boy because I don't see him from 6 AM until 5 PM. Basically, I don't have any time to run. I am not sure how I am going to run this marathon on a little over 100 days. Also, my husband has not gone to x-fit this week, which is unheard of. Last night at dinner we decided to work out a schedule that will start next week and will allow us to run. I get Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. He gets Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. If this works out then we will see about adding days. I am going to bring out the BOB stroller this weekend to see if B could handle some light jogging in it. I know that it says over 6 months, but he has had very good head control since birth and is extremely strong. He can sit up in his Bumbo with no issue, so I am thinking some towels for support and a flat surface to run on and we may be cooking with gas.
I feel like I am holding things together right now, but not tightly. Things could become derailed fairly fast and fairly easily. I hope things normalize soon. I am not a "just holding it together" type of person, if you haven't noticed. Haha. I want to be in control of my life 99.99% of the time. 10% doesn't cut it!
Time to go spend some quality time in the lactation dungeon with my pump and 1/2 caf coffee. Yes, I am back on the caffeine. At least partially. :)

So much to update on
Tuesday, March 12, 2013
I have been a bad blogger lately. So much going on and so little time to sit and write it all down. This post is going to be all over the place, as a result. It also might be a little long and have a lot of pictures, but I labeled everything so you can skip over parts that don't interest you. I can't believe that I am due 1 month from today!!
Work Baby Shower
My co-workers threw me a baby shower last week and they pooled together to get me the B.aby J.ogger C.ity S.elect stroller! It converts to a double, if necessary, which was why I registered for it. It was so nice of them to get me that since it wasn't cheap. We all met in one of the office conference rooms and they had cake and fruit salad. Unfortunately I didn't get to have anything after my last shower cake disaster. My boss got me 2 oatmeal cookies with raisins for later with a meal (that didn't turn out well either, I'll explain later). Check out the cute cake! It was half chocolate and half vanilla with butter cream frosting and fondant. The top part of the cake came off so one of my co-workers wrapped it up nicely and put it in the freezer for me to have when I can eat cake again. :)
I was really on the fence about these for a number of reasons. First of all was the cost. Most of the photographers that I looked into were so expensive and that was just for the actual shoot. They tacked on a ton for prints and even more for digital copies. I ended up finding someone through a friend of mine and this photographer ended up being great! I was also on the fence because I just felt weird to be having my picture taken by someone else. Ultimately, I decided to have them done because I wish that my mom had them done when she was pregnant with me. I would love to look back and see photos of her pregnant. She can't seem to find any. This little guy will have a bunch. :)
Gestational Diabetes
I would say that I have been able to keep things under control for the most part. My fasting blood sugar is still unpredictable. Some days it is good and some days it is a little higher. I am currently taking 12 units of H.umulin N at bedtime (or rather 8 hours before my scheduled wake-up time). I saw my endocrinologist this morning (have I mentioned that I love her??). She thinks that I am doing well. My A1C was 5.2. I told her about my disaster with the 1/2 of an oatmeal cookie with dinner. Basically, I had a very low carb dinner of baked salmon with sautéed kale w/ sliced almonds. I added the 1/2 of a cookie as my treat with dinner. This half a cookie made my 1 hour and 2 hour pp readings high. I was so upset and annoyed that I thew out the other 1 and 1/2 cookies from my boss. I told the endocrinologist this and she was so nice. She gave me a fast-acting insulin pen (N.ovolog) and told me that if I wanted to have a cookie every now and again or go out for dinner that it was ok, since I was so strict. She told me to take 4 units before eating a higher carb meal and to NOT FEEL GUILTY. She also said that at this point the baby's organs are developed enough that having a high reading once and again is not going to do much to cause the baby issues. She told me that I was doing a great job and she expects me to go back to normal after the baby is born. I hope she is right. I have a follow-up scheduled with her for 6 weeks post-partum.
Pregnant Co-worker
So she FINALLY told me, on her own, about a week and a half ago that she was pregnant. I asked her why she waited so long and she said that she hadn't told anyone at work other than my boss and her "supervisor", the co-worker who I had been talking to about about that she hates. We talked for a while and she mentioned the whole NT scan issues with the down syndrome markers. She said that even though the results from her tests came back ok, that she was kind of depressed. I told her that I struggled with some depression issues around the same time along as her. She was surprised that I did since I had such a tough time staying pregnant, but I think she appreciated my story and felt better about her own situation. One thing about me is that I don't hold grudges. I am always open to patching things up. Even though I was really pissed that she hadn't told me anything, I am over it. I feel like I have my friend back again, which is nice. Now when we see each other in the bathroom we can talk about our pregnancies rather than my pregnancy.
Work
I have decided to start working from home, exclusively, the week after next. I am already working from home 2 days a week, which is nice, but I am getting to the point where walking to and from the train is getting to be very long and very painful. I have started transitioning my work to others, which is hard for me. I hate feeling like I can be replaced so easily and I shudder to think about the condition of my "space" when I get back. I manage a small area of the company, pretty much on my own. No people, just an application and an audit-controlled process. I am the only "expert" on the subject. I am sure things will be ok, but it is tough to let go.
More Jealousy Issues
My husband is still on the C.ross F.it kick and now has entered a competition, which spans five total weeks. I sort of had a freak-out on Sunday and ended up making him cry. He spent the morning going to pick up the glider and then installing the baby seat in the car. He then went off to his X-fit competition, which we said would be fast. 3 1/2 hours later, he comes home, while I had spent the last 3 hours going to the grocery store, cleaning, washing clothes, getting the nursery ready, etc. I was so pissed that I just barked at him and didn't ask him how he did. Then I ignored him for several hours while I continued my housework. The crying came into play when I tried to strike up conversation after cooling down. The truth is, I am still jealous that he spends so much time at that place with, amongst others, lots of 20-something girls, so I brought that up, again. He thinks that I don't support him and that I am fixated on making myself believe that he gives a crap about any of the girls that he works out with regularly. He said that he has always been there to support my races (he has sat through many a 5k, 10k, 1/2 marathon, 30k and marathon), which is true. Ugh I felt like a terrible person because he really does support me and I don't support him enough. My hormones in combination with my physical un-fitness have turned me into a raging bitchy lunatic. He cried, I cried, but we patched everything up. This is why we work so well together. We communicate. He did awesome at his competition, too. He got the best score at his gym. :)
Speaking of Running...
NYC Marathon 2013, here I come! After 3 consecutive fails in the lottery, I am a part of the last group ever that gets guaranteed entry in the 4th year after failing the lottery 3 times in a row! They were thinking that they might have to cut my group due to the hurricane disaster last year causing an overflow of 2012 registrants, but apparently my group was lucky enough to get in. I have my work cut out for me following the birth of this little guy, but I am so excited to have a fitness goal to look forward to. This will be my 3rd marathon!
The Baby!
Saved the most important for last! I had an appointment yesterday with MFM (35 weeks, 3 days), which included another growth ultrasound. I was so nervous since last appointment they had him measuring in the 83 percentile. Well this time he is measuring in the 64 percentile, so I was thrilled. This is about a week ahead. Apparently I had a much better radiologist this time (one of top two high-risk radiologists in the country). The baby's biophysical profile was 8/8! His head is down and facing my back and he was very active during the scan. He had his hands in front of his face and his feet right up near his head. My fluid level was normal. I didn't get an internal check this time, but I did get a GBS swab, which I have no doubt will come back positive based on how I seem to fail just about every test. I am prepared for that. My no-IV request might not become a reality, but oh well. My blood pressure was good and my weight was up. I was up to 146, which is up 26 lbs. Looks like I am heading for at least 30, gulp. I asked the doctor about how long they would let me go before inducing me and he said he would like to wait until 40 weeks, unless some other complication arises. He said that if things haven't progressed by 40 weeks that we'll talk induction dates. I have a feeling this guy is not going to come early. I think he really likes it in there. I posted another pic of him here. I have no idea what the ultrasound pic from yesterday is looking at. So help me out if you know!
Wow that was a lot to write. I think I am caught up. Now I have to pack my hospital bag, which will be the subject of a future post. :)

Miscarriage induced ADD
Friday, May 25, 2012
I think that any infertile/recurrent miscarrier knows that TTC takes over your life. It isn't necessarily a conscious thing either. It sneaks in to all aspects of your day-to-day from when your alarm goes off each morning, to what you do/don't eat/drink, to how you behave around people who sneeze and get pregnant with a healthy baby. Since my first miscarriage, I have developed serious attention deficit disorder which has started affected my life more than ever before. I have so much trouble concentrating at work and that amount of work that I get done along with the quality of my output has suffered immensely.
Here is my typical day:
Alarm goes off at 4:30 AM.
Take temperature.
Do hair/makeup.
Get dressed.
Pack lunch, feed dog/cats, eat breakfast.
Commute to work.
Arrive at work, update Fertility Friend, check message boards, look at my fav TTC blogs, write in my blog.
Talk to my friend who is going through infidelity.
Try to do some work.
Get email notification regarding conversation update on FF, stop to check, get side-tracked and Google something TTC related.
Go to a meeting.
Eat lunch @ desk, chart surf on FF.
Go to meeting.
Try to do some work.
Mind wanders, check FF chart, add stupid data, compare my chart to others.
Try to do some work.
Commute from work.
Get home and check FF.
Work out, shower.
Check FF.
Cook dinner, eat dinner.
Pass out of couch @ 8:30 PM.
Check FF again, look at blogs.
Pass out in bed @ 9:30 PM.
I used to be such a high performer and over-achiever at work and now I feel like I just don't care that much about work right now. I care about making a sticky baby. As you can see from above, I have a tough time getting through any part of my day without incorporating some type of TTC activity my mind is constantly wandering off there. I am unable to stay focused on working and I have a massive project that I am responsible for completing that has high management visibility. Ugh. I wish I could find a way to be able to cut all of this out. I have already given up Facebook and Babycenter in hopes that would help, but I seem to have just found other outlets for my obsessive-compulsive behavior. I have been debating whether or not to see a counselor for a while. I am thinking maybe it is almost time to take that road.
